HealthyHK Video Tutorial How to use Instant Query Introduction Instant Query is an online health data query system. It allows you to set your own search criteria, create statistical tables, charts and/or maps according to your own needs. How to access Instant Query You can access Instant Query by selecting the submenu "Instant Query" at the menu bar. Tutorial objectives In this tutorial, we will see how to "Select search criteria", "Display statistical tables", "Draw charts" and "Display maps". The subject – "Death Statistics by Sex, Age and Residential District (from 2001 onwards)" will be used as an example. Please note that Map function is only available for those subjects in Instant Query with map information. A map icon will be shown after the hyperlinks of those subjects for illustration. Demonstration:Click "Instant Query" first, select the subject "Vital Statistics", and then choose the category "Death Statistics by Sex, Age and Residential District (from 2001 onwards)". A new window will be opened. Page content overview In "Death Statistics by Sex, Age and Residential District (from 2001 onwards)" webpage, the header will show the Welcome message, the subject of Instant Query and the last updated date of subject data. Selection criteria for searching will be displayed under the header area. In "Search criteria", there is an illustration to show the way in selecting multiple search criteria with reminder notes of "Death Statistics by Sex, Age and Residential District (from 2001 onwards)". How to select option(s) in search criteria In the "Search Criteria" table, there are several selection boxes that you can choose. For example, if you are interested in data from year 2001 to 2006. Then you can choose the options from 2001 to 2006 under "Year of Death Registration". In order to have multiple selections, you can click and hold the "Ctrl" button to choose more than one option during the selection. If you want to include all "Age Group" in your analysis, click the button "Select All" under the data field "Age Group". If you want to undo the selections or clear those selected option(s), simply click the "Reset" button. Both "Select All" and "Reset" buttons are available in all selection boxes. After you have made all the selections, click "Start Calculation" button to get your results. How to display statistical tables Statistical table will be displayed in the first part of result. It summarizes your search criteria. It shows Total Number of Deaths from 2001 to 2006 below the specified variables for tabulation. You can have further breakdown of the figures by specifying the row and column variable as well. However, only cross-tabulation between two variables can be done. In addition, you have to select the type of statistics shown in the cells of the table. For the dataset of "Death Statistics by Sex, Age and Residential District (from 2001 onwards)", you can choose to display either number of deaths or death rate (per 100,000 population). Then, click "Show Statistical Table" button to view the results in table. Also you may choose to display the result in a separate page by clicking "View the Table in a New Window" button and print the page. How to display charts There are three types of bar charts in "Instant Query" to choose including Grouped bar chart, Stacked bar chart and Percentage bar chart. Click "Show Chart" button after you have chosen the type of chart you want to use in the pull-down menu. In this example, choose Grouped bar chart then the chart will be shown. Each bar will show the corresponding figures for that bar. For example, when locating mouse icon over to the first bar of bar chart, it will show "Number of Deaths in Central & Western is 41 and Sex is Male." At the right side of chart, a legend will show to describe the bars. You can also click "View the Chart in a New Window" button in order to print out in a separate page. How to display maps Before you want to display the map in the subject selected, you have to make sure that map function is available in Instant Query which you want to browse, and "Residential District" has been selected as column variable. For example, select Male in "Sex" for displaying the Male figures only. When the mouse icon is placed over a particular district, corresponding figures of the district such as "In Wong Tai Sin District Council District, Number of Deaths is 106" will be displayed. In addition, you can choose "All Shown" to show all information of district. The map legend is located on the left. There are four grades of shades from light green, green, dark green to black, each of them represents a quartile. The lightest shade is the 1st quartile (smallest number of cases), while the darkest shade represents the 4th quartile (largest number of cases). Moreover, when the area shows white of shade, it means no data in this district or outside scope. You can click "View the Map in a New Window" button in order to print out in a separate page as well.
