2. Coverage
   1. Population refers to land-based non-institutional population of Hong Kong and thus does not cover: (a) inmates of institutions; and (b) persons living on board vessels.
   2. The registered death database covers all population of Hong Kong.
3. Limitations
   1. The numerator (i.e. number of registered death) of the formula covers institutional population of Hong Kong, but the denominator does not cover inmates of institutions. Hence, the estimated death rate is slightly greater than the actual death rate.
   2. There is no separate category of illegal immigrants, transients, marine population, population in military camp, unknown residential in the land-based non-institutional population. Hence, the death rate of this category of population (i.e. ) is undefined.
   3. The death rates of registered deaths with unknown age and sex are undefined.
4. Definitions of Variables
