- Heart diseases have been the fourth leading cause of death in Hong Kong since 1960s. "Heart Diseases" refers to a broad spectrum of diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, chronic rheumatic heart disease and congenital heart disease, and coronary heart disease is the major cause of death among them. In 2022, about 10.9 persons on average died from coronary heart diseases per day. Moreover, more males died from coronary heart diseases (male to female ratio = 1.7:1).

- In 2022, 31,334 inpatient discharges and deaths were related to coronary heart diseases, accounting for 1.6% of all inpatient discharges and deaths.

- In 2022, the number of deaths were 3,995, accounting for 6.5% of all registered deaths. The crude death rates for male and female were 75.5 and 36.7 per 100,000 population of respective sex.

- The overall age-standardized death rate of coronary heart diseases showed a slight decreasing trend in recent years.

- The age-standardized death rate due to acute myocardial infarction, the major form of coronary heart disease, was found to rise until 1990 and then dropped steadily.

Note(s):
Classification of diseases and causes of death is based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) 10th Revision from 2001 onwards. Figures from 2001 onwards may not be comparable with figures for previous years which were compiled based on the ICD 9th Revision. Hence, caution should be exercised when interpreting the trend of diseases across 2000 and 2001.
Acute Myocardial Infarction corresponds to codes 410 in ICD-9 and I21-I22 in ICD-10.
- In 2022, the age-specific death rates due to coronary heart diseases increased as age increased.
